THOUGHTS:  It's so good to be back at KGC!  When Fred had a problem, several days after we arrived, I couldn't believe how fast our neighbors were here when they saw the paramedics.   Many others volunteered to help, too.   Fortunately, he is fine.   I tell this to emphasize the camaraderie at the Club.   What a wonderful place to live!       --SJB

FLASHBACK

The Veteran's brain has a hidden spot,
Where memories are stored and hoped forgot.
Months and years can pass right by,
While these spots quietly, silently, lie.

Then there is a flash and these spots awake.
What was the reason, what did it take?
The whip, whip of a chopper?  A very loud sound?
A flash of light, a smell, or shake of the ground?

The Vet is now back, he didn't want to go.
He hears the sounds and he sees the foe.
His breathing quickens, and he starts to sweat.
Oh, please dear Lord, let me forget!

If he is lucky, he can push the memory aside,
Hoping it goes back, to that spot to hide.
But if he's unlucky, that memory will stay,
And occupy his mind, both night and day.

When the memories persist and rule the soul,
The Veterans existence has no goal.
Don't judge the homeless, many have fought
To protect your freedom, which can't be bought.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.
