State agency sells our personal data:
It may be difficult for many to believe that our state legislators have passed a law, presumably signed by the governor, permitting the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to sell and distribute the personal information from our driver's license records (date of birth, Social Security number, address, phone number, medical disabilities, etc.). The law also requires the department to give individuals the opportunity to block this information from being sold (Driver Privacy Protection Act); but it is each individual's responsibility to notify the department in order to get it blocked. The department doesn't seem to be making any volunteer efforts to get this information out to the people.
Fortunately, I received a copy of an e-mail message advising me and others of this law; and I have taken the necessary action to block this information from being sold by the department in the case of my wife and myself. I want to pass this on to as many people as I possibly can, because I am confident that most people do NOT want their personal information being sold to outside sources by an agency of our state government.
Possessors of a Florida driver's license or ID card should access the department's web site, which is www.hsmv.state.fl.us. On the home page of the web site, click on "Driver License Check." This will permit a person to enter a license number to check its validity; and then to block personal information from being distributed to other sources. Just follow the instructions. It is very simple and will take only a short time to complete. This must be done for each individual license holder desiring to block the information.
For those without a computer, forms are available in the Driver's License office in the Kash & Karry shopping center on Jacaranda Boulevard.
